Panel Discusses State of Local KC Women’s Shelters

On Saturday, Nov. 12, representatives from four local women’s shelters sat down together for AAUW-KC’s membership meeting that focused on “Women in Crisis.”

Each panelist gave a presentation about her shelter including information on crisis intervention, prevention and support services and programs. The meeting adjourned following an educational Q&A session.

Why not include Rose Brooks, True Light, Newhouse, Hope House or a local women’s shelter on your holiday shopping list this year! Your generous support will help women throughout our community find renewed self-esteem, establish financial and emotional freedom, and realize their long-desired life goals.

100 High School Girls

100HSgirls

We invite you to join us to celebrate and honor high school senior girls on Sunday, April 19, 2015. The event will be held at 2 p.m. at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center (3700 Blue Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64130). Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Marjorie Williams, who served as superintendent of the Hickman Mills School District and has taken an active role in education and community issues and organizations in the Greater Kansas City area. She has taught students in K-12 as well as in higher education. Students from the Paseo Academy of Fine & Performing Arts will provide musical selections. Refreshments will be served.

Since 1931, the AAUW-KC branch has sponsored this program which recognizes high school senior girls from the Kansas City metropolitan area. Senior girls submit essays focusing on their academic performance, community service or leadership experience and a committee of AAUW-KC members select three applicants who are awarded college scholarships. All of the young women who participated in the essay competition and who aspire to reaching their full potential in higher education are celebrated at the event.

We look forward to your attending this inspiring celebration. For more information, please contact Earline Bentley at earline_bentley@att.net or Maureen Hurley at maureenhurley36@gmail.com.
